Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

Check out this list to help identify what may be preventing your Central Air Conditioners from working before calling us to have your furnace serviced by a professional.

Central Air Conditioners Troubleshooting Guide

  • Is your thermostat set in the “cool” position?

  • Is the temperature setting on the thermostat set lower than the thermostat’s indoor temperature?

  • If you have a digital thermostat, can you see the snowflake or cool icon clearly and are the batteries good?

  • Is the power turned on to the Air Conditioner? Check your fuse or breaker panel to see if the circuit is on. The outdoor unit (condenser) may have a service switch that should also be in the on position.

  • Is the power turned on for your furnace? At the thermostat, turn the fan to “ON.” The fan should run when power is being supplied to furnace.

  • If the fan does not run, the power may not be getting to the furnace. Is the circuit breaker on or is the fuse at the panel box good? Is the service switch for the furnace in the “on” position?

  • Have you changed your filter? A blocked filter can cause your air conditioners to freeze up and shut down due to lack of proper airflow.

  • Are the air registers (supply or return ducts) blocked or plugged?

  • If the Furnace fan and outdoor unit seem to be running and there is no air coming out of the vents, the system is likely iced up and will need to be turned off for a few hours.

The 3 main reasons that your Central Air Conditioner can freeze up are:

  1. Restricted or no air flow through furnace

  2. Temperature set too low (20áµ’c should be lowest setting)

  3. Low on Refrigerant ( system has a leak )
