Air Filtration

My home is brand new. Do I really need to be concerned with indoor air quality?

Absolutely. Energy conservation measures have led to airtight construction that can minimize the amount of fresh air entering and circulating within the home. Air pollutants build up and create a hazardous indoor living environment. A heat recovery ventilator (HRV), which acts as the lungs of a home, is a great way to introduce fresh air while increasing the efficiency of your furnace.

Here is one of the best written articles and video from Manitoba Hydro on the subject of HRV’s: https://www.hydro.mb.ca/your_home/heating_and_cooling/ventilation_systems.shtml

Odor Control

One of the most insidious pollutants found in most homes is chemicals. They are called volatile organic compound (VOCs) and usually take the form of paints, adhesives and household cleaners. They are also found in most new products such as furniture and carpets. Carbon filters are a cost effective way to filter out these type of impurities in your home’s air.

Dust Control

With the high efficiency furnaces on the market today, it is more important than ever that every furnace have a quality furnace filter to keep dirt out of the furnace so it does not plug up the secondary heat exchanger. Using a  good quality filter and replacing or cleaning it regularly will go a long way in maintaining the efficiency of your furnace, reduce maintenance and prevent overheating in the winter and icing up of your air conditioner in the summer. We recommend a 2” or 5″ pleated filter that will provide lower resistance to airflow with its extended pleated surface area. This will help keep your furnace working at the efficiency level you paid for.

Mold & Bacteria Control

Another way to purify the air in your home is with the use of a UV light in your duct system. These devices use ultraviolet light to kill mold, bacteria and viruses that may be present in your home’s air. They are also the best tool for removing odors from your home.

iWave Air Purifiers

This latest technology in air quality has surpassed may of the other products in that it covers a wider spectrum of what most homes require for a more complete and effective solution.

With the technology installed in over 100,000 applications worldwide, iWave-V is a low-maintenance; bi-polar, high-output ion generator designed specifically for treating air in residential duct A/C systems (but could be used in other air conditioning applications). As the air flows past the iWave-V, positive and negative ions actively purify the supply air, killing mold, bacteria and viruses in the coil and living space. The ionization process also reduces allergens, smoke and static electricity, as well as controlling odors (cooking, pet, VOCs) and other particles (no more sunbeams) in the air without creating ozone or any harmful byproducts.

iWave-V treats the air in residential duct air conditioning systems up to 6 tons (2400 CFM) in size (or other appropriate A/C applications). Designed for universal mounting, the iWave-V typically requires only 15 minutes to install inside or outside of duct, or to attach magnetically near the indoor fan. Install between air filter and cooling coil to treat the indoor coil; as an alternative, the iWave-V can be installed in supply air.

Tradesman Mechanical has recently installed some of these in our own employee’s homes to get an accurate assessment based on real feedback. The results have been overwhelmingly positive and we are now able to recommend this product to our clients.
